Big List of Homophones in English Language for Writers Starting from Alphabet A to Z

I have been writing for years, but this article on homophones in the English language written in alphabetical order has been the most difficult. I wrote just this article for almost 3 days.

Why?

Because we wanted this list to be big and comprehensive. And we did that for you.

Brace up for the long read. You can use the table of contents to navigate to the aphabet you need the homophone of.

What is a Homophone?

Homiophones are two or more words that have the same pronunciation but different meanings and/or spelling.

For example, the words bear and beer. They mean entirely different things but have similar sounds.

In some instances, homophones also have the same spelling. For instance, beer means tolerating something while also meaning an animal.

Types of Homophones

There are several types of homophones but the most popular two are;

  • Near Homophone
  • Pseudo homophone

Near Homophones

A near homophone is a word that is pronounced almost the same as another word but has a different meaning and slightly different spelling.

Unlike complete homophones that have the same pronunciation, the near homophone just has one letter that makes it sound differently.

Examples;

  • Proceed and precede
  • Worn and warn
  • Accept and except

Pseudo Homophones

Pseudo homophones are words that are pronounced similarly but may not sound identical due to slight variations in pronunciation or accent, or they may be homophones in some dialects but not others. Here are a few examples:

  • through and threw
  • saw and soar
